The Springfield Police Department, in conjunction with the Target Corporation, sponsors the event. Goals included heightening crime and drug prevention; generating support for and participation in local anticrime efforts; and strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.
The turnout and interest send a message to criminals, letting them know residents are organized and committed to keeping the township a safe place to live and work, noted Chief Joseph Daly and event coordinator Officer Patrick McKenna.
From 6-9 p.m., Aug 6, residents are reminded to lock their doors, turn on exterior lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police officers at the Springfield Township Country Club complex, 400 W. Sproul Rd. The pool will be open and free to all township residents.
First responders will have equipment and displays; community agencies will share valuable information; and many vendors will be offering complimentary food and gifts.
For questions regarding the event, contact Officer Patrick McKenna at 610-544-1100, ext. 415, or by e-mail at pmckenna@springfieldpd.com.
National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event, held the first Tuesday of August.
The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.
The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts.
The events are typically organized by block watches, non-for-profit organizations, companies and police departments.
